Public Works Employee
The City of Elkader is seeking to hire a Public Works Employee. This is a full-time position that involves helping residents in a variety of ways.
The Public Works Employee works under the direction of the Public Works Director and is part of a team that is responsible for maintaining and repairing streets and the stormwater system, snow/ice removal, maintaining equipment and vehicles, assisting seasonal employees with park maintenance and mowing; and maintaining all City facilities including the swimming pool.
The successful candidate will have:
- the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public;
- the ability to provide customer service with a positive attitude;
- the willingness to seek opportunities to improve the community of Elkader;
- the ability to maintain favorable working relations with co-workers and the general public;
- a positive “can-do” attitude;
- experience in public works or other maintenance or related activity;
- have, or be able to obtain, and maintain as a condition of employment, Class B, Commercial Driver’s License;
- experience operating equipment such as end-loaders, power tools, and all trucks, tractors, lawn mowers and the street sweeper;
- mechanical/repair skills;
- unique problem solving skills.

- The starting salary for this position is $18.00/hour. (The range for this position is $18.00/hr starting to $23.00/hr base at four years or $37,440-$47,840.)
- Benefits include paid premiums for health insurance, life insurance, STD, LTD, and IPERS in addition to paid leave time.
- Hours of work are typically 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; M-F. Some weekend and/or holiday hours may be necessary for snow removal, pool maintenance or special events.
Please note, employees must be able to respond to an emergency within 30 minutes (under normal driving conditions) from the time they receive the call to being onsite.
