DESCRIPTION:Frog and Toad Call Monitoring Workshop \nTuesday\, April 4th \n6:30-9:30 \nReservations Required \nIf you are interested in getting involved\, volunteers must register for one training \nworkshop\, which is most appropriate for adults and teens.  The DNR and the Clayton \nCounty Conservation Board will partner up to host a workshop this year at the Osborne \nNature Center on April 12th\, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.  For more information and about the \nsurvey and to register visit: http://www.iowadnr.com/   vwmp/ \nThe Iowa DNR’s\, Stephanie Shepherd\, will be leading a workshop to learn how to identify 16 frogs and toads based on sound to become a volunteer wildlife monitor\, helping the DNR monitor amphibians across the state and providing valuable citizen science. \nJoin other volunteers this summer along Iowa’s back roads listening for the frog chorus.  Soon\, in farm ponds along Iowa’s roads\, a raucous chorus of male frogs will be making themselves heard as they vie for mates.  You can be one of the volunteers\, standing clipboard in hand\, ear cocked\, mentally sorting out each of the calling species which are using these seemingly ordinary ponds. \nAcross the state of Iowa\, community scientists are making enormous contributions to wildlife conservation.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Volunteer Wildlife Monitoring Program (VWMP) program coordinator Stephanie Shepherd explains\, “With more than 1000 wildlife species in the state\, we just don’t have enough staff in the DNR to adequately monitor all the vulnerable species that we need to.  This is where citizen scientists play a crucial role.” \nAmphibians have been of concern to scientists all over the globe because these vulnerable critters appear to be declining. Reservations need to be made by December 9th. Jordan and Nate will be auctioning off items donated by the local communities\, businesses\, and individuals as well as serving a meal provided by Edgewood Event Center. \nCurrently two grants have been secured totaling $274\,600 to go towards the development of the campground but total project needs are $626\,000. These two students have taken action to help the CCCB work towards securing the needed funds to complete the campground project. \nReservations for this event are required and can be done online by visiting https://www.claytoncountyconservation.org/upcoming-events. Part of the funds have been secured through these grant dollars: Wellmark Large Match Grant $100\,000\, Upper Mississippi Gaming Grant $48\,375\, and TAP $192\,000. DESCRIPTION:Clayton County Conservation in partnership with the Turkey River Recreational Corridor is pleased to be hosting the 2022 Osborne Disc Golf tournament on Saturday\, May 14th\, at the Osborne Park disc golf course. Rain date will be one week later\, May 21st. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 AM with same-day registration opening at 8:30. Registration is $20\, and participants can buy in to a $2 “Ace Fund” that will pay out to anyone hitting a hole in one. Cash prizes will be awarded to male and female winners\, and all participants will be entered in a raffle prize drawing.\nThis 18-hole tournament is open to all ages and skill levels. The one-of-a-kind course features long prairie shots and short technical throws through the woods. What better way to spend a Saturday morning? SUMMARY:Megafloods and Mighty Rivers on the Upper Midwest
DESCRIPTION:Geomorphology – the study of landscapes – contributes to our understanding of the Upper Midwest and the histories of its mighty rivers\, the Mississippi\, the Minnesota\, the Missouri\, and their tributaries.  These modern rivers surround the Iowan Erosion Surface (IES) landform region\, with its enigmatic geomorphology and sediments.  Many features of the Silurian Escarpment and the IES resemble those that have been identified and described at other locations as subjected to megaflooding related to sudden drainage of glacial lakes. \nDr. Kathryn McCarville will share her research\, including new interpretations of local geology thanks to advancements in geologic dating technology\, in this fascinating presentation hosted by Clayton County Conservation. SUMMARY:Iowa’s Evolving Landscape: Missing Our Pleistocene Megafauna
DESCRIPTION:The tallgrass prairies and savannahs that once covered much of the interior of North America have been largely displaced by agricultural activities during the past 200 years.  Restoration efforts are usually aimed at re-creating the ecosystems of just a few hundred years ago\, as it was reported by European explorers\, miners\, fur trappers\, and settlers.  But to really understand these ecosystems and successfully restore them\, we need to think farther back into deep time\, and consider the importance of the Pleistocene megafauna as ecosystem architects\, agents of disturbance\, and seed dispersers. \n  \nDr. McCarville studied geology at UCLA before pursuing her masters at the Colorado School of Mines and her doctorate at the South Dakota School of Mines. Her current research interests include the origins of the Iowan Erosion Surface\, soil biology and soil health\, and the role of disturbance in prairie ecosystems. This program is free and welcome to all ages.
