DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 1st\, children from age 0 through 6th grade will be welcomed to come register for a number and then search the down town for their matching number posted on business windows to pick up their basket. \n\n\nRegistration begins at 10:00 a.m. at Mascara Park (between GEAR Elkader and the Elkader Opera House)and will be on a first come first serve basis. \n\n\nThere will be 100+ baskets available. \n\nThe Chamber will also be putting together a golden basket or two that has fun items from our local businesses.

DESCRIPTION:Frog and Toad Call Monitoring Workshop \nTuesday\, April 4th \n6:30-9:30 \nReservations Required \nIf you are interested in getting involved\, volunteers must register for one training \nworkshop\, which is most appropriate for adults and teens.  The DNR and the Clayton \nCounty Conservation Board will partner up to host a workshop this year at the Osborne \nNature Center on April 12th\, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.  For more information and about the \nsurvey and to register visit: http://www.iowadnr.com/   vwmp/ \nThe Iowa DNR’s\, Stephanie Shepherd\, will be leading a workshop to learn how to identify 16 frogs and toads based on sound to become a volunteer wildlife monitor\, helping the DNR monitor amphibians across the state and providing valuable citizen science. \nJoin other volunteers this summer along Iowa’s back roads listening for the frog chorus.  Soon\, in farm ponds along Iowa’s roads\, a raucous chorus of male frogs will be making themselves heard as they vie for mates.  You can be one of the volunteers\, standing clipboard in hand\, ear cocked\, mentally sorting out each of the calling species which are using these seemingly ordinary ponds. \nAcross the state of Iowa\, community scientists are making enormous contributions to wildlife conservation.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Volunteer Wildlife Monitoring Program (VWMP) program coordinator Stephanie Shepherd explains\, “With more than 1000 wildlife species in the state\, we just don’t have enough staff in the DNR to adequately monitor all the vulnerable species that we need to.  This is where citizen scientists play a crucial role.” \nAmphibians have been of concern to scientists all over the globe because these vulnerable critters appear to be declining. DESCRIPTION:Pasque Flower Hike \nFriday\, April 21st \n5:00-6:30 PM \nAldo Leopold once said\, “the chance to find a pasque flower is as inalienable as the right to free speech.” Come and exercise your right with a guided hike to see one of Iowa’s earliest-blooming and most beloved wildflowers at the Motor Mill Historic Site. \nPasque flowers indicate high-quality natural areas\, particularly prairie areas including a thin-soiled “goat prairie” overlooking the Turkey River Valley. To nature lovers\, their emergence marks the start of the wildflower season. \nThe hike will be a short but rugged off-trail hike\, so participants should be confident in their mobility and wear appropriate footwear. SUMMARY:Driftless 100 Gravel Bike Race
DESCRIPTION:Ride the Driftless\n\n\n​\nWelcome to the Driftless 100\, formerly the Volga City Gravel Race.  Our event is designed as a fundraiser for the local EMS crews in Clayton County\, Iowa. All proceeds go towards the improvement of equipment and supplies of local Emergency crews. ​ \nThe Race itself comes in 3 distances\, 100\, 60 and 30 miles. 90-95% of each course is gravel with a few miles of level B\, blacktop and bike trail included.  There are hills in this area of the state\, some rollers but a lot of steep semi-short climbs that will get the legs going no matter what level of rider you are.  The estimated average for climbing is 100 feet per mile.  If you are looking for an additional incentive for your spring training we are doing a custom prize for any rider who breaks the 8 hour mark on the 100 mile course\, thats only 12.5 MPH average. \n\n\nStart Times\n\n\n100 mile racers will start at 8:00 AM \n60 mile race rolls out at 10:00AM \n30 mile racers will begin at 11:00 AM \nPacket Pick-up will be at 4-7PM Friday at Gear in Elkader\, Iowa. You can also pick up front 6:30AM to race start on Saturday morning at the Elkader City Park. \nSignage will be on the course for the 30 mile only. Navigation is required for the 60 and 100. Rear blinker lights are required for the 100 mile racers.  ​ \nAward ceremony will be held at Deb’s Brewtopia in Elkader at 5:00PM. \n​Support and Cut-offs \n\n\nWe will have aid stations at mile 26 and 45 of the 60 mile course and mile 18 of the 30 mile course. \nThe 100 mile course will have 3 stations at approximately 26\, 46 and 69 miles. These stations are run by our local EMS crews and they will have water and food. There will not be drop bags. \nCut-Off times for the 100 (after these times you will be redirected to the 60 mile route) \nMile 25: 11:30AM \nMile 46: 2:00PM
