DESCRIPTION:Please save the date for the upcoming Elkader Annual Community Awards Banquet on January 17th at Johnson’s Reception Hall. A social hour will begin at 5:30pm followed by a meal from Johnson’s Restaurant and Reception Hall. The awards presentation will begin at 7:00pm.  \nWe have a lot to celebrate since the last time we were able to get together. The City of Elkader\, Main Street Elkader\, and the Elkader Area Chamber of Commerce Annual are pleased to once again host this celebratory event. Several community awards will be announced at the event. In addition to our community awards\, this celebration will honor the past business owners in our community that have retired and will highlight the new business owners who have joined our community.  We look forward to having you join us in celebrating what 2022 holds for our great community. \nRSVP here by January 7th. Payment for meal is due with RSVP.  \nChecks can be made out to Main Street Elkader and mailed to 207 N Main Street PO Box 125 Elkader\, IA 52043. The cost per meal is $16 a person and includes the cost of tip. Drink cost is not included in the meal ticket.

SUMMARY:Iowa’s Evolving Landscape: Missing Our Pleistocene Megafauna
DESCRIPTION:The tallgrass prairies and savannahs that once covered much of the interior of North America have been largely displaced by agricultural activities during the past 200 years.  Restoration efforts are usually aimed at re-creating the ecosystems of just a few hundred years ago\, as it was reported by European explorers\, miners\, fur trappers\, and settlers.  But to really understand these ecosystems and successfully restore them\, we need to think farther back into deep time\, and consider the importance of the Pleistocene megafauna as ecosystem architects\, agents of disturbance\, and seed dispersers. \n  \nDr. McCarville studied geology at UCLA before pursuing her masters at the Colorado School of Mines and her doctorate at the South Dakota School of Mines. Her current research interests include the origins of the Iowan Erosion Surface\, soil biology and soil health\, and the role of disturbance in prairie ecosystems. This program is free and welcome to all ages.

DESCRIPTION:Come out to Osborne Park on Friday\, January 28th at 5:30pm to learn about these secretive nocturnal animals.  Visitors will learn about all the things that make owls so amazing before heading out to the forest to look and listen along Osborne’s trails while we try to call owls in. This fun night hike will last about an hour and a half.  Remember to bring a flashlight and dress for the weather!    \n  \nThe Osborne Center is located on Highway 13\, ten miles north of Strawberry Point or five miles south of Elkader.  The center is open from 8:00am to 4:00pm\, Monday-Friday.
