Proposed Downtown Safety and Design Ordinance
Part of the responsibility of Main Street Elkader is to promote a safe and attractive business district. As part of the process, Main Street Elkader’s Design Committee has reviewed those city ordinance that pertain to design and made some suggestions to improve them and bring them up-to-date. Following is a copy of the ordinance the City Council is considering. Feedback is appreciated. Please contact Main Street and tell us what you think. Thanks!

Construction Updates
Keystone Bridge Project (waterline portion):
The waterline portion of the Keystone Bridge project includes a new line to be bored under the river and some new main on South Main Street and High Street SE. To date (3/08) the new main on South Main Street is complete. In December, the contractor ran into rock while trying to bore across the river and the city continues to work with him to find suitable sub-contractors to complete the river bore. The winter weather has made completing this problematic.
Sewage Treatment Plant Project:
The City of Elkader is faced with having to upgrade their wastewater lagoon system. A resident information sheet provides a brief explanation and history of the project.
Update as of 3/08:
The City was awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to help offset the costs associated with the project.
- The facility plan has been approved by the Department of Natural Resources.
- The engineer is working on preliminary plans and will present those to the City in March or April for review.
